“Every Once in a While We Have to Pinch Ourselves!“

When Pat and Tom Cronin moved to Saluda River Club in 2013 they knew they would miss the Long Island home where they had raised their children and lived for 42 years. But the sadness was short-lived because the Cronins would now be closer to their sons and their families – one living in Florida and one living in a home in Lexington, South Carolina.

Several years ago Pat and Tom started to think about the possibility of retiring to South Carolina. They set their sights on historic, charming Aiken. During a visit to Lexington, the Cronins’ daughter-in-law suggested they drive by Saluda River Club in Lexington and have a look around.

Pat recalls, “We walked into the cottage model home in Lexington, South Carolina and I immediately said there was no reason to look any further. I knew this was it!” In May 2013 the Cronins moved into a roomy cottage in the Village District and they’ve never looked back.

“Our home is on a corner and my husband is often on the front porch so neighbors are always stopping by for a visit,” she says. The Cronins have made good friends and enjoy community activities. But nothing compares with the joy of having their children close by.

“It’s such a thrill to hear the back door open and someone call out, ‘Grams, where are you?’ as the grand-kids head to the pantry to look for a snack.”

The novelty of living near family in a community as unique as Saluda River Club doesn’t seem to be wearing off. Pat and Tom love sitting outside in all seasons, admiring the professionally maintained landscaping and enjoying the uniquely Southern front-porch culture.

Adds Pat, “It was a big decision to break away from our familiar setting in New York and a community we had grown to love. But it was time for a new adventure. Every now and then we have to pinch ourselves to confirm that we are actually living this fairy tale of life at Saluda River Club!
