“It’s So Good to Be Home”

Yes, you really can come home again. Just ask Georgianna and Don Dukes. The couple, both natives of Columbia, married and moved away, spending the last 28 years in Knoxville, Tennessee. Don was in sales and marketing and Georgianna worked as a teacher.

Don retired after suffering a stroke in 2001, (he’s doing great), but Georgianna continued to work until 2012.

“When I retired we decided it was time to move back home closer to family,” Georgianna said. That includes their son, his wife and three children, as well as other relatives in the Columbia area.

A real estate agent showed the Dukes some homes in Northeast Columbia, which they liked. “Then the agent brought us out to Saluda River Club, and we just fell in love with it.” Working with Andrew White of Edge City Builders, the couple built a three-bedroom, Charleston-style cottage in The Woodlands District.

The Dukes moved into their charming new home in October 2013 and have never looked back, stating that “the workmanship is just masterful and [they’ve] had so many compliments from friends who come to visit.”

Don originally had his sights set on a golf course home. However, once the couple discovered Saluda River Club Don realized that a golf course (which he could find anywhere) simply couldn’t compare to the Saluda River Club amenities. The Dukes love walking by the river and entertaining the grandkids on the playground and at the pool. Like many homeowners they say life feels like an endless vacation.

Perhaps the best amenity is Saluda River Club’s people.

“Everyone is so friendly,” Georgianna said. “Our neighbors are young families and it’s so much fun to have kids nearby!”

The Dukes have become active members of a church in Lexington, which has become another connection to the larger community. They’ve made great friends there and love being part of a small and familiar town.

Content with their choices, it’s the little things that make life sweet for Georgianna and Don these days. Like “Gigi and Papa day” when the Dukes pick up the grandchildren at school and spend precious time together; or sitting together on their back porch early in the morning, quiet and grateful to be back home again.
